Twelve-cylinder, 60° V-configuration diesel with direct injection and turbocharging. The S12R covers the widest output band in the MHI marine high-speed range, spanning propulsion, auxiliary genset and diesel-electric duty from a shared core architecture.

- Full-load operation allowed unlimited, unlimited hours per year. Cargo vessels and fishing boats.
- HDHeavy Duty
- Up to 83% load, full load for 8 hrs per 24 hrs, under 6,000 hrs/year. Working, fishing, tug and ferry boats, passenger vessels.
- MDMedium Duty
- Up to 75% load, full load for 1 hr per 6 hrs, under 4,000 hrs/year. Pleasure and patrol boats, high-performance vessels.
Injectors, turbocharger cartridges and water pump kits are held in Wangara. Genset-specific alternator parts are sourced through MHI on indent.
